We had been escorted all day by well-armed troops from the Belize Defense Forces who book-ended our little convoy in two government-issue Land Rovers. As we finally emerged from the jungle onto an actual dirt road (you could hear the collective sigh of relief) and began heading to our night’s upscale digs at the Chaa Creek Resort, word came over the radio that our escorts wanted the group to stay close together as there was a risk of being attacked by bandits this close to the Guatemalan border after dark. Even after we were out of the woods literally, we weren’t.
